Access for the Visually and Hearing Impaired
Visually Impaired
For patrons who are visually impaired, Optelec Image Enlargement Readers for low-vision patrons are available on the Library’s First and Second Floors.
On the Second Floor an Optelec reader and Kurzweil 1000 computer station, equipped with ZOOM TEXT and JAWS for Windows, are located near the Reference Desk. This unit has closed circuit television (CCTV) and a built in camera. With Optical Character Recognition (OCR), an image can be scanned and changed into text. The text is then ‘read’ and the audio can be accessed through attached speakers or through earphones available at the Reference Desk. Some information can be saved to a 3 1/2” floppy disk.
On the First Floor there are Optelec Clearview 500 and Aladdin Genie reading stations which offer access to printed materials for low-vision patrons. Inquire at the Public Service Desk for the Coordinator of Library Automation who has information regarding a Braille Display unit that turns text into Braille and is available for use within the library.
Hearing Impaired
Disability Support Program & Services (DSPS), located in Cunningham 120, phone number—(209) 954-5330, has Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD/TTY) payphone service for personal calls. There is a TDD/TTY telephone for use of the hearing impaired to call in for reference assistance.
